One of our most important ministries

A unique feature in our worship this coming Sunday (Sept. 14) will be prayers for the 7th and 8th grade confirmation students and the blessing of their Bibles.  This special moment marks the launch of a new year of pastoral and educational ministry among this group of six young members of Gloria Dei.  Lutheran Confirmation is more than a rite of passage—it’s a formative journey that helps young people claim the promises made at their baptism and grow in a life of faith with understanding, conviction, and the support of a loving community.

At its heart, confirmation is a public affirmation of the baptismal covenant. It’s the moment when individuals say “yes” to the faith into which they were baptized, often as infants.  It is a declaration (confirmation) that God’s relationship with us persists and endures every day.

Prior to confirmation Gloria Dei offers a two year program of intentional teaching—through classes or hybrid learning—on core Christian beliefs: the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and Lutheran teachings on the sacraments of Baptism and Communion.  Key Bible stories undergird this time spiritual pilgrimage.

In the end, confirmands publicly affirm their faith before the congregation, pledging fidelity to Christ and active participation in the church.

Most importantly, however, we must ask why this ministry is so important.  Here at Gloria Dei, the confirmation ministry is a foundational piece of our educational investment and a distinctive piece of the life we share together.
  • Confirmation helps individuals move from inherited faith to personal conviction. It’s a bridge from childhood belief toward mature discipleship.
  • Confirmation marks a deepening inclusion in the life of the church.  The congregation stands with these young disciples, teaching the formative traditions and stories.  Simultaneously, we all learn and examine, with this new generation, the nuances of the context in which our congregation is called to witness.
  • Confirmands, in community with the congregation, are equipped to live out their faith in everyday life, whether in relationships, or in present and future vocations.
Confirmation is often misunderstood as a “necessary rite to endure,” but it’s meant to be a blessing—a joyful extension of lifelong faith formation.
At Gloria Dei, our 24-week Lutheran confirmation outline shapes this journey with theological depth and practical and relational care.  Join us this Sunday as our community surrounds and supports our young disciples on their journey.
